Pearls are precious treasures, and with a little care they can last for generations.
Because pearls are strung on silk or nylon, their strands naturally weaken with time and use. Gem and mineral hardness is measured on the Mohs scale. The numbers are based on the relative ease or difficulty with which one mineral can be scratched by another. But the Mohs scale is deceptive. The steps between the minerals are not evenly spaced. For example, diamond is only one number away, but it’s many times harder than gems in the corundum family.
Pearl is ranked 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it’s very soft and easily scratched or abraded. Here’s how to keep your necklace looking beautiful and secure.
Wear and tear happens naturally: Body oils, cosmetics and friction inside the pearl drill holes slowly wear down the cord.
Stretching occurs: All threads - silk, nylon, or otherwise, will stretch and loosen. Knots in particular can lengthen over time.
Prevention saves heartbreak: Restringing before the cord breaks avoids the risk of losing pearls in an inconvenient moment.
Every 1-2 years if you wear your pearls regularly.
Every 3-5 years if worn only occasionally.
Immediately if the necklace looks stretched, the knots appear loose, or the clasp doesn’t sit firmly.
After Restringing, knotted necklaces may return slightly shorter, as knots tighten during the process.
We carefully count and record each pearl before and after restringing for your peace of mind.
Store flat: Always keep your pearl necklace lying flat, not hanging, to reduce stretching.
Last on, first off: Put on your pearls after makeup, hairspray, or perfume and remove them before bed.
Wipe gently: After wearing, wipe pearls with a soft cloth to remove oils and perspiration.
Avoid water: Don’t swim, bathe, or shower in your pearls, the cord and nacre can both be damaged.
Pearl can be damaged by many chemicals and all acids. The list includes hair spray, perfume, cosmetics, and even perspiration.
Pearls should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. It’s safe to use warm, soapy water for occasional, thorough cleaning. If the pearls are strung, be sure the string is completely dry before wearing.
For routine care, it’s best to wipe cultured pearls with a very soft, clean cloth after each wearing.
Pearls are organic gems - treat them gently, and they’ll continue to glow beautifully for many years.
